Newspaper Coverage Frequency of Artificial Intelligence
Download Daily Data
We are pleased to introduce three new daily indexes regarding Artificial Intelligence that run from January 1, 2015 to the present. Our AI Index quantifies newspaper coverage frequency of artificial intelligence and related topics like machine learning. Our AI-E Index quantifies coverage frequency at the intersection of artificial intelligence and economics. Our AI-EU Index quantifies coverage frequency at the intersection of artificial intelligence, economics, and uncertainty.
The daily news-based indexes are based on a broad set of newspapers derived from the Access World New's NewsBank service. While NewsBank has a wide range of news sources, from newspapers to magazines to newswire services, we conduct our analysis only utilizing US newspaper sources. These newspapers range from large national papers like USA Today to small local newspapers across the country.
For these three indexes, we first measure counts of articles that meet the following criteria:
- AI: (AI, artificial intelligence, genAI, machine learning, computer vision)
- AI-E: (AI, artificial intelligence, genAI, machine learning, computer vision) AND (economic, economy)
- AI-EU: (AI, artificial intelligence, genAI, machine learning, computer vision) AND (economic, economy) AND (uncertain, uncertainty)
The number of newspapers that NewsBank covers over our sample period has increased from under 100 in 1985 to over 2000 by 2025. To correct for this growth, we scale the raw daily frequency counts for each index by the total number of newspaper articles on the day.
Note that each day we update the data from the previous 30 days, so recent data are subject to change. Each series is normalized to 100 from 2015 to 2021.
